RJ #21 Science Questions that Children Ask

                                                                                                                                       1/24/12

Dear Mrs. Zrihen,

I just finished reading the book Book of Science Questions that Children Ask. It was by Jack Myers. It was a really interesting book. One of the questions really hooked me and it was on page 18. ''How can you tell the difference between a male and female black widow spider?'' I am fascinated by spiders so it really made me notice.
I used 2 before reading strategies which were reading the synopsis and reading the reviews. I did that inorder to see if I liked the book or not. My 2 during reading strategies were reading slowly and reading the last line from the last time I read the book inorder to understand what was happening. My 2 after reading strategies were skimming and scanning inorder to summarize what I read in my head and I looked for context clues from the words I didn't understand.
The genre of this book is Informational. The topic is Science. The main idea is questions kids did not know the answers to about human nature and science. It is stated in the title. I would also change the title to Why or Why Not?. All the supporting details are the questions the kids asked which could be found on pages 12-251. They are factual. The essential message is that it is great to be curious and you should ask questions no matter what someone else says. A cause is a cat sensing danger, the effect is it scratches its back and hisses. Something similar is that all spiders have short arms while a difference is that a male has thicker arms than a female. Some text features are illustrations, bold print and italicized print. There were no more than that. The P.O.O is question and answer. The author's purpose is to inform us of some Science questions kids ask and what the answers are. The author is not biased towards anything in the story. The point of view is 2nd person. There was no figurative language. There was only one source stated which was Highlight magazine.
All the vocab is intended for kids to understand although there is a lot of text, there were no vocabulary words I didn't understand.
This book relates to me by me being a fan of spiders and also by being curious. This book relates to the Highlight magazine I read last year in a doctors office. This book relates to the world by there being many science questions still unanswered today.
As I said I really liked that black widow question and now will take extra procaution on not being bitten by one.
I would rate this book a 3 out of 5 for it was interesting, but it could've been better. Thats all I have to say.
