Dear Mrs.Zrihen,
I just finished reading the book Greek Myths and Legends by Usborne. There was one passage that really caught my eye. It was on page 8. It stated '' The ancient Greek religion tried to explain how the world began like this: ''. I picked this passage because it showed how the Greek religion really tried to explain everything in the actual bible with their interpretation. The significance of this passage to the book is that it says how they tried to explain how the world was created with their religion. They did not actually explain how scientifically.
I used 2 before reading strategies such as predicting what the book was going to be about, and trying to interpret what the front cover picture meant. The 2 during reading strategies that I used were reading slowley to understand what I was reading, and to slowly comprehend what was happening at that moment and why it was happening. The 2 after reading strategies were studying all the gods in the back. It was impossible to memorize them though. Also, I checked to prove if my prediction was correct or not which it was.
The genre of this book is a myth in the section of a folktale. There are no specific main characters but the god of gods is Zeus. The setting where all the gods lived was on Mount Olympus at the time of the ancient greeks. There was no plot considering the book listed the gods and what they did and who they punished. There are a lot of problems such as someone who challenged Aphrodite and their punishment was becoming a hiddious monster. There is no tone for there is no plot. Same with mood. The theme in the story is Greek Mythology. The moral in the story is to never challenge a god. The point of view is 3rd person. The pattern of organization is used with subtitles for each god and goddess. The author's purpose is to teach us about the ancient Greeks and their different beliefs. There is no author's perspective or figurative language, for the author wrote the book as an equal sided author. If I was Zeus I would buy everything possible in the world including a 24 karat gold Torah.
If I could rate this book I would give it 3 stars out of 5 because it barely kept me hooked, although it was interesting.

RJ #4 Holes
9/20/11
Dear Mrs.Zrihen,
I just finished reading the book Holes by Louis Sachar. It was one of my top 3 books I have ever read. It kept me hooked up to an hour at a time. This book had many characters. ( Stanley, Zero, X-Ray, Armpit, Mr. Sir, the Warden, and Mr. Pandenski). I found that Stanley Yelnats is spelled front and backwards the same way. Also that this Stanley was the 4th in their past generations. I found that very intriguing. There was one passage that I will summarize up for you considering I don't have the book with me. It is when there were 8 lizards on stanley and Zero's body as they stood still. During that time Mr. Pandenski asked '' Why don't we just shoot them''? Then the Warden asked '' The Lizards or the kids''? I found, that that showed how dumb and stupid he is. Also how bad the camp treats those kids by making them work out in the hot sun while their lives are in danger. That passage's significance to the book is that it shows what the conflict in the story is, being Stanley sent to a harsh camp and how stupid the directors of that camp are.
There were 2 reading strategies I used before starting the book. The first one is checking out the frontcover's textfeatures. There was a face that appeared to be a little bit chubby, while there was a barren wasteland in the backround filled with holes. The second before reading strategy was seeing the movie. That helps me, when I'm reading I am able to picture in my mind what is going on considering I saw the movie. While I was reading I used 2 strategies. The 1st one was reading the line where I last left off before starting again so I could understand what was going on at that moment. The 2nd one was reading slowly so I would not speed read but understand what I am reading. I used 2 reading strategies after I finished the book. The 1st one was reading the back again so I could understand now what it meant. The 2nd one was recommending the book to one of my friends, Mikey. I told him he would enjoy it.
The genre of this book is realistic fiction and I would hope it would not happen. When I mentioned the characters before I did not mention who was the good guy and bad guy. Stanley and Zero were the protagonists, while Mr.Sir and the Warden were the antagonists. The rest were foil characters. The setting in this book is present time at Camp Green Lake. The wheather conditions were super hot with no chance of rain. The exposition in the story was when Stanley got charged with stealing Clyde Livingston's 5 thousand dollar shoes. The conflict was when he was in camp Green Lake and he was not happy so he ran away with nothing to eat or drink. It was man vs. man. The other man was Mr. Sir and the Warden which was a girl. That must mean that the conflict was external. The climax was when Stanley and Zero found the treasure, but in the falling action they were caught at camp and were surrounded by poisonous lizards and the camp directors. They had their pistols. The resolution was when Stanley and Zero kept the treasure and Camp Green Lake was shut down. The tone in the story is sad because of what is happening to the kids at Camp Green Lake. The mood in the story is worried for you don't know what will happen to Stanley and Zero. The theme is friendship. The moral is always believe in yourself and your dreams. Also to appreciate what you have. The point of view is 1st and 3rd person. The P.O.O. in the story is cause and effect for everything in the story happened for a reason. The author's purpose is to entertain us with a great story that shows a wonderful moral. There is no author's perspective because there is nothing to be biased or unbiased of in the story. I cannot figure out the figurative language because I already checked in my book to you. This book showed true courage to me and taught me valuable lessons. It's the kind of book that gives you that tingling feeling when your done.
I would give this book a 5 star rating because it continuously kept me hooked. You know I'm tough on rating books from past experiences.

RJ #3 Hoops
9/13/11
Dear Mrs. Zrihen,
I'm almost completed with the book Hoops by Walter Dean Myers. I think that a certain passage that was key in the story were the first 2 sentences of the book.'' One of the things my father used to say was how his days were piling up on him. When I told him I didn't know what that meant, he said one day I would''. The significance of the passage to the book is that I believe it is the base of the book. Throughout the whole story bad things continue to rise problems in the story. I also picked this passage because it created a hook for me. That is one of the reasons why I picked this book. Two of the reading strategies before I read the book were looking at the cover and determining from the colors whether it would be a happy, sad, or mad book. I determined it would be mad because the color orange symbolizes anger. Also, I predicted what the book would be about based on the back summary. During the book I read my lines carefully, that way I would understand it better. Also, I would keep track of most of the characters because there are so many. After I read it, I decided to rate it. I would give it a 3 out of 5 stars, because although it had a good plot, it was not easy to keep track of all the characters. Finally, I decided to recommend this book to my friends. I would recommend the book to people of the ages 12-14.
The genre of the book is realistic fiction because the plot hasn't happened but could. The main 2 characters are Lonnie, and Cal. Lonnie is a basketball player trying to make it into the pros, while Cal was a pro and is now his coach. The setting is not said but seems like it has all of the features of present and takes place over many days. The exposition in the story is when Lonnie meets Cal. The rising action includes the conflict which is man vs. man. It is when the basketball team has trouble beating all the teams. There was an incident in the story where Paul shot Lonnie. He turned out okay. The tone in the story is confident because Lonnie is always sure he could beat his competition. The mood is the same. The theme in the story is basketball. The moral in the story is never get to confident of yourself for you could become embarrassed. The author's purpose in the story is to entertain the readers with a fun story with an important moral. The author's point of view towards the story is not shown. If I was in the author's shoes I'd not but in to everybody's business. That is my response starter.
Sincerely

RJ #2 Street Pharm
9/6/11
Dear Mrs. Zrihen,
I just finished reading the book Street Pharm by Allison Van Diepen. It was really good. The passage that I picked that I thought was significant was on the last page of the book. (297). '' I know I don't deserve you, Alyse.'' I took her face in my hands, and made her a promise. '' But I will.'' I picked the passage because it shows how a person can change even when they are addicted to selling drugs. The significance of the passage to the book is to go with the moral of the story which is to not do drugs, and you can change your life even when it is messed up.
I started reading after I wrote my first rj on this book which means I already used my two before strategies. Two reading strategies while I was reading was checking each and every word so I would know if I understood it or not. Also I would picture in my mind what was happening on that page at that time. That way I could understand it better. Two after reading strategies I used were looking back at the title and think now of what the illustration on the front cover means. It was a picture of drugs which I now know was Ty's business. Finally, I remembered the conflict which was Darkman, and how they resolved it which I will tell you later. I like the way the author at the end of the story made us hooked with an amazing sentence which I won't tell you. You'll have to read the story.
The genre of this book is realistic fiction because the plot hasn't happened but could happen. The main character's Ty and Sonny are dynamic characters because they describe them a lot yet they don't describe their likings. They were both protagonists and the antagonist is Darkman a competing drug dealer. The setting in the story is Manhattan New York. The time is present. The rising action in the story is Darkman tries to take over Ty's business. The climax is when Sonny gets shot, and after that Ty is so ready to do anything to get rid of Darkman. The falling action is when they figure out a plan to set up Darkman and get him arrested. The resolution is when the plan works and he does get arrested. The conflict is external and man vs. man because Ty is facing Kevin King otherwise known as Darkman. The tone in the story is angry because Ty is angry at Darkman. The mood is sad, because you want Ty to change and you know it is hard for him. The theme in the book is drugs. The moral of the story is to never do drugs, and you can change the course of your life no matter how hard it is. The author's point of view in the story is that you should not give up your life to drugs. The P.O.O. in the story is problem and solution because always a new conflict appears out of the blue. The author's purpose in the story is to inform people about the consequences of drugs. The author is unbiased about selling drugs. I liked that book a lot considering it taught me lessons. I would rate this book a 7 out of ten because of the important lessons and suspense.
sincerely,
