Dear Mrs. Zrihen,
I just finished reading the book Night by Elie Wiesel . The setting in the story is Sighet, Transylvania. A passage in the story that I liked is on page 120.'' Our lives no longer belong to us alone; They belong to all those who need us desperately''. I picked that passage because it popped and really shows how our religion as Jews use our attitude.
I used 6 reading strategies while reading the book which were skimming and scanning for text features, predicting about the book, reading slowly, reading over to understand what's happening, reading the synopsis, and reading the reviews on the back.
The genre of this book is actually memoir as Mrs. Zrihen told me. This week I found an autobiography. It is about a person and his memory of World War 2. The topic is the Holocaust. The main idea is Elie has a normal life when things slowly turn strange until they are transported out of their home. It is stated. Another title I would give the book is ''Good to Strange to Worse''. I would in order to explain how their lives in their neighborhood in Germany slowly fell apart. Some supporting details in the story are his neighborhood being taken over by Germans and a big fence around his neighborhood. They also have a curfew and can only leave their house a certain number of times a day. They are factual. The essential message in the story is that our world has made a terrible mistake by letting the Holocaust ride on while it could have been stopped. Over 9 million people died and 6 of those million were Jews. If we don't pass that message down from generation to generation, it could happen again. A cause in the story is Elie living in a Jewish community and celebrating a Jewish life and an effect is him being taken control over slowly by the Nazi's. Something similar in the text is everyone in their small neighborhood being Jewish. A difference in the story is that Elie and his family were poor while most of the Germans were rich and in the middle-class. Some text features included are Publication, Synopsis, Dedication, Reviews and a photograph of the author. The P.O.O is chronological order for it shows a description of his whole experience first to last in the Holocaust. The author's purpose is to share an experience in the Holocaust. The author's biased because the author only gives his opinion and perspective. His point of view is 1st person. Some figurative language were simile and metaphor and they help by emphasizing specific points in the story. There is no resources that are found to confirm this information for the information is given by the author himself.
There were no vocab that would appear to have difficulty in my sense of knowledge.
This book relates to me by me being Jewish. This book relates to another book I read called The Wave because they both deal with the Holocaust. This book relates to the world because there are many stupid wars going on today that are caused by religion.
If I was in Elie's shoes I'd pray all day and night before I was transported to camps.
I would rate this book 3.5 out of 5 stars because it could have been more suspenseful but it had great detail.
Sincerely, Isaac Paley 702

RJ #21 Science Questions that Children Ask
1/24/12
Dear Mrs. Zrihen,
I just finished reading the book Book of Science Questions that Children Ask. It was by Jack Myers. It was a really interesting book. One of the questions really hooked me and it was on page 18. ''How can you tell the difference between a male and female black widow spider?'' I am fascinated by spiders so it really made me notice.
I used 2 before reading strategies which were reading the synopsis and reading the reviews. I did that inorder to see if I liked the book or not. My 2 during reading strategies were reading slowly and reading the last line from the last time I read the book inorder to understand what was happening. My 2 after reading strategies were skimming and scanning inorder to summarize what I read in my head and I looked for context clues from the words I didn't understand.
The genre of this book is Informational. The topic is Science. The main idea is questions kids did not know the answers to about human nature and science. It is stated in the title. I would also change the title to Why or Why Not?. All the supporting details are the questions the kids asked which could be found on pages 12-251. They are factual. The essential message is that it is great to be curious and you should ask questions no matter what someone else says. A cause is a cat sensing danger, the effect is it scratches its back and hisses. Something similar is that all spiders have short arms while a difference is that a male has thicker arms than a female. Some text features are illustrations, bold print and italicized print. There were no more than that. The P.O.O is question and answer. The author's purpose is to inform us of some Science questions kids ask and what the answers are. The author is not biased towards anything in the story. The point of view is 2nd person. There was no figurative language. There was only one source stated which was Highlight magazine.
All the vocab is intended for kids to understand although there is a lot of text, there were no vocabulary words I didn't understand.
This book relates to me by me being a fan of spiders and also by being curious. This book relates to the Highlight magazine I read last year in a doctors office. This book relates to the world by there being many science questions still unanswered today.
As I said I really liked that black widow question and now will take extra procaution on not being bitten by one.
I would rate this book a 3 out of 5 for it was interesting, but it could've been better. Thats all I have to say.
Sincerley, Isaac Paley 702

RJ #20 Nerds Part 2
1/17/12
Dear Mrs. Zrihen,
I am just about finished reading the book Nerds by Michael Buckley. It is really good so far. There was one passage that I really want you to look at which is the same one as in the last readers journal. It is because it really caught my eye.It was on page 13, '' I'm going to conquer the world''. I picked that one because it has a lot of suspense and really gives the reader a nudge about what the conflict will be about.
There were six reading strategies I used while reading the book. Before I skim and skanned for text features and only found pictures, and I read the synopsis to get an idea of what the book will be about. During reading I read slowly to make sure I understood what I was reading and read the last line from the last time I read the book inorder to get a vibe of what's happening. After reading I read the synopsis again inorder to help me pull everything together, and I summarized the book in my head inorder to get ready for my rj.
The genre of the book is science fiction because it deals with technology that is not possible right now.
The characters are Jackson, Duncan, Ruby, Heathcliff, Julio, Matilda, Dr. Jigsaw, Mr. Dehaven and the Hyena. All those are round and dynamic. People such as the lunch lady who is just foil are flat and statistic. The setting is at Nathan Hale Elementary in North America. The exposition is when Jackson is a star and very popular. The rising action and conflict is when Dr. Jigsaw wants to take over the world and he hires an assasin to help him capture enemies. The climax is when Jackson becomes a memeber of the NERDS to help stop jigsaw. The falling action is when Jackson quits the NERDS for they don't want him. That is how far I got in the book. The conflict is external and is man vs. society. It is Jackson and the NERDS vs. Dr. Jigsaw. The tone is hilarious and serious a long with the mood. The theme is technology. The moral is to not judge someone by what they look like or do but by the content of their character. The point of view is 2nd and 3rd person. The P.O.O is cause and effect. The author's purpose is to entertain readers with a story. The author is not really biased towards anything. There wasn't really any figurative language, although there was one similie.
I would recommend this book to the whole class and 6th grade. If I was in Mr. Dehaven's shoes I'd be very suspicious based on Jackson's bad grades.
I would give this book 4 out of 5 stars for its great plot and suspense.

RJ #19 Nerds
1/10/12
Dear Mrs. Zrihen,
I am in the middle of reading the book Nerds by Michael Buckley. So far it is a really good book. There was one passage on page 13, '' I'm going to conquer the world''. I picked that one because it shows a lot of suspense and really displays something important that is going to happen in the book. The conflict.
There were 2 before reading strategies I used which were reading the synopsis, and gathering reccomendations online to see if it would fit my style. I also used 2 during reading strategies which were reading slowly to make sure I understand and reading the last line from the last time I read. My 2 after reading strategies were skimming and scanning inorder to summarize the book in my head and reccomending it to one of my friends.
The genre of this book is science fiction because it cannot happen and deals with technology. The characters are Jackson, Duncan, Ruby, Heathcliff, Julio, Matilda, Dr. Jigsaw, and the Hyena. All those are round and dynamic. People such as the lunch lady who is just foil are flat and statistic. The setting is a school in North America. It takes place in the basement of the school known as the ''playground''. The expossition is when Jackson is a star and very popular. The rising action and conflict is when Dr. Jigsaw wants to take over the world and he hires an assasin to help him capture enemies. The climax is when Jackson becomes a memeber of the NERDS to help stop jigsaw. That is how far I got into the book. The main conflict is that Jigsaw is trying to take over the world, it is external and man vs. society because jigsaw faces the NERDS and other forces as well.
The tone is serious and funny and the mood is hysterical and shocking. The theme is technology. I do not know the moral yet because I did not finish the book yet. The point of view is 2nd and 3rd person. The P.O.O. is cause and effect. The authors purpose is to entertain. His perspective is not biased towards anything. There wasnt any figurative language.
I really like this book and recommend it to the 6th graders. If I was in Jacksons shoes I'd be ashamed.
I would give this book 3 stars for it was good but not great.

RJ #18 Thats What She Said
1/3/12
Dear Mrs. Zrihen,
I just finished reading That's What She Said over winter break. It was by Justin Wishne and Bryan Nicolas.. I found the book to be highly innapropiate. All of the passages were innapropiate and this one on page 123 stated '' On an old newspaper ad for a joystick game, the title said, The longer you play with it, the harder it gets.'' Thats what she said. I picked it because it shows how bad of people we are this age and what we have come to in our time. I found it crazy.
I used 2 before reading strategies which were reading the back and skimming and scanning. I saw one passage but thought that it was the only one, then when I got home I saw. The 2 during reading strategies were reading slowly inorder to understand and reading the last line from the last time I read to now understand what section in the book we are in. The 2 after reading strategies were abandoning the book for its horrifyingness, and checking over to make sure I knew what to write in my rj.
The genre of this book is short story because it is seperated into two sentences per story or passage. The characters are not mentioned considering of the amount of stories and how short each one is. The setting varies for each passage. There is no plot structure because of how the stories are written and how short they are. The conflict varies for each story like in one it has to do with not having the right materials for a science experiment. The tone is funny or relaxed and the mood is also. The theme is comedy. The moral is basically joke about funny things that sound wrong or innapropriate. The point of view varies but is mostly 2nd person. The P.O.O is climatic order. The author's purpose is to entertain. The author is biased toward sex jokes. There are no figurative languages in any of the short stories.
I really did not enjoy this book and will give it away soon. If I was one of the author's I'd be ashamed right now. I would give this book 2 and a half stars because of its stupidness. I do not recommend this to the class.
