RJ #16 The Lost Hero Part 2

                                                                                                                                                  12/13/11

Dear Mrs. Zrihen,

I just finished reading The Lost Hero by Rick Riordan, my favorite author. There was one passage on page 144. '' He took a deep breath and plunged into the forest.'' I picked that passage because I love a sentence at the end of a chapter that really hooks you into the next chapter. The significance to the book is that it shows how Leo takes a journey into the forest to find monsters which is based on Greek myths and is what this book is about.
I used 2 reading strategies before reading this book which were reading the summary on the inner front and back flaps and predicting what the next few chapters would be about. My prediction was they would find out where Percy was but will be tricked by a monster on the way. My 2 during reading strategies were reading slowly to make sure I understand, and reading the last line of the last sentence I read last time to know what is happening then. The 2 after reading strategies I used were checking my prediction which was sort of right, and reading about the next book in the series.
The genre of this book is fantasy which is a sub genre of fiction. It was based on Greek mythology. The characters are Jason, Annabeth, Rachel, Piper, and Leo. Those are the main characters. Some foil are Drew and Butch. All are dynamic except for the foil. The setting is Camp Half-Blood in New York. The time is present and the social and wheather conditions constantly change. The exposition is when Jason loses his memory, the rising action is when Annabeth arrives and informs Jason, Piper, and Leo of the dissapearance of Percy Jackson. I have not found the climax yet though and the falling action nor the resolution. I have not got up there yet. The conflict is supernatural vs. supernatural and external. They cannot find the lost hero Percy Jackson. The tone is serious, while the mood is worrying. The theme is caring because every character will fight for eachother.I do not know the moral because I didn't finish the book yet. The point of view is first person. The P.O.O is cause and effect. The author's purpose is to entertain readers with a suspensful story that really makes you want to read more. The author has nothing to be biased towards in the story. Some figurative language was a simile, onomatopoeia, and a metaphor. I haven't found anything else yet.
I really liked this book and if I was in Rachels shoes I would be freaked out by the oracle taking over my body from time to time considering I wouldn't be able to control it. I would rate this book a 9 out of 10 because it is an awesome story and I love the author Rick Riordan.

Current Event #3

Current Events Journal
Title:

Animal shelter's behavior experts face life and death decisions for animals

Author: John Owens
Source: Miami Herald
The topic of the article is Animals
The main idea of the article is: People in shelters face life and death decisions for animals. It is stated in the title.(implied/stated)
The author’s purpose for writing this article is to inform us how the tests are run in shelters for animals and what steps they take to train them.
The author’s perspective in this article is objective/subjective (biased) because he likes animals and wants them to be a good trained pet not an aggressive one when in a household.
The pattern of organization of the article is chronological order because it uses the words first and then.
The reason the author chose this pattern for the article is so that we could better understand the process of training the behavior of these animals.
The text features included in the article are: A lot of quotes. Quotes help by showing us the opinion of other people.
Parentheses, helps by assisting readers in the meaning of a sentence.
This article is about (a summary in your own words) dogs who are taking into shelters and trained for not having aggresive behavior. If the staff in the shelter thinks it is a threat to them or the other dogs it will be put to death. The author expresses this by giving an example of a dog. Also, the steps for this training are very simple but can show signs of serious anger problems.
The significance (importance) of this article is great. If someone's dog has anger problems it must be trained otherwise it could be a danger to the family.
What I learned from this article is that 7400 dogs are put to death annually at Chicago Shelters.
What I liked about this article is that it really touches readers at how important it is to have a dog that is safe for your family and to realize the process of training if it is not.
What I did not like about it is that it states how so many dogs are put to death if they are a threat to society.
Who should read this article and why?
I think dog owners who have got their dog from a shelter should read this and to know that they saved a life.
This article reminds me of (text-to-self) my dog Samson because we got him from the Humane Society.
(text-to-text) This article reminds me of the book Homewordbound.
(text-to-world) This article reminds me of how many people own dogs and cats  this age.
New vocabulary I learned

RJ #14 The Lost Hero

                                                                                                                                     12/6/11

Dear Mrs. Zrihen,

I am in the middle of reading a great book called the Lost Hero by Rick Riordan. It is part of an amazing series. There was one passage that really caught my eye. '' We need to talk''. That passage was at the end of a chapter. Usually they have a lot of suspense, this one did. In the book there are a lot of creative hooks and considering the book is filled with action, I noticed a lot of suspenseful statements.
I used six reading strategies. The two before reading strategies are reading the summary on the front and back flip, and predicting what the book would be about. The two during reading strategies I used were reading slowly so I could understand it better, and reading the last line from the last time I read. The two after reading strategies I used were checking my prediction and looking at the next book in the series and learning about it online.
The genre of this book is fantasy. The characters in the story are Jason, Piper, Leo, Annabeth, and Butch. Except for Annabeth and Butch everyone is round and dynamic so far. The setting of the book is Camp Half- Blood. I have only got up to the exposition which was Jason not remembering where he is and who he is. It is all a mystery. The conflict is that Annabeth cannot find the lost hero Percy Jackson. It is external and supernatural vs. supernatural. The tone is worried and the mood is also worried for Percy and where he is. The theme is adventurous. I do not know the moral because I didn't finish the book yet. The point of view is first person. The P.O.O is cause and effect. The author's purpose is to entertain the readers with a suspenseful story. The author has nothing to be biased towards. Some figurative language was a simile, onomatopoeia, and a metaphor.
I really liked this book. If I was Jason, I would be really happy that I have a hot girlfriend. Especially since she really likes me. I would rate this book a 9 out of 10 because it is so amazing.
