Dear Mrs. Zrihen,
I just finished reading the book Guys Read Funny Business by Jon scieszka. There was one passage that really caught my eye on Page 85, '' Which ever is the easiest.'' Charlie said in 1st person. That passage shows me how lazy our citizens our today and gives me an idea of how they will act later in society. The passage relates to the book because Charlie is trying to appeal to the judges the easiest possible way.
I used 6 reading strategies for this book. Before I made a prediction, and skimmed for a picture that would relate to the next story. I did and it was quite interesting. It was a mummy. During reading I read slowly to make sure I understand what I am reading, and I read the last line I read from last time to get a vibe of what is going on right now. The 2 after reading strategies I used were checking my prediction which was off, and summarizing the story in my head so that I would be ready for the next rj.
The genre of this book is a memoir which is a sub genre of non-fiction. The topic of the book is a contest. The main idea is Charlie and Dwight want to be the winner of a contest so he could rub it in Zeke's face and go to Splashtastic water park. It is stated. Another title could be ''The Mummy That Went Down the Wrong Slide''. I chose it because it summarizes the whole book in one phrase. Three supporting details were Charlie and Dwight making a bet with Zeke, Charlie pushes his friend too far for winning the get away, and Charlie and Dwight winning the contest. They are all factual. The essential message is that you should never rub things in other's faces for you might be that one and that is not how you would want to be treated. A cause is that Charlie's dad messes with the thermostat and the effect is that Charlie and Dwight's project melted. There were some things that were similar in the story such as Zeke and Charlie both wanting to win first prize. The different things were that Charlie knows how to use the high-tech thermostat while his dad doesn't. I could only identify 3 text features which were an illustration, italicized print, and different fonts. The P.O.O. is cause and effect because one thing results in another. The author's purpose is to share a memory. The author is not biased towards anything. The point of view is 1st person because it is a memoir. The only figurative language I remember is a simile. The only verification of this book I can find is the author Eoin Colfer. There is nothing else for the book is a memoir. There were 3 new vocab words I learned which were inevitably, portrayal, and venturing.
inevitably, context clue- touched often and broken, definition- easily
portrayal, context clue- of an eighteen year old, definition- showing as
venturing, context clue- outside, definition- going out
This book relates to me because I love winning contests. This book relates to the first story ''Best of Friends'' because they both talk about amazing slides. This book relates to the world because millions of people visit water parks every year. I thought this book was very unique. I would not reread for it did not have the spark I was looking for.
I would rate this book an 8 out of 10 for it was good, but not the best.
Sincerely,
Isaac Paley

RJ #13 Guys Read Funny Business
11/22/11
Dear Mrs. Zrihen
I am in the middle of reading the book Guys Read Funny Business by Jon Scieszka. The book is made up of multiple stories and in the first one there was an interesting passage on page 27. ''Why don't you pick on someone your own size?'' The line shows that someone is being bullied and his friend is standing up to the bully. That tells me the moral of that part in the story is to be brave. I totally agree.
I used two reading strategies before the book which were predicting what it would be about. I was totally off. I also looked at the painting on the front cover to help with my prediction. I used two during reading strategies which were reading slowly to make sure I understand what's going on, and I reread parts I didn't understand. The two after reading strategies I used were scanning what I read for any unread text, and checking my prediction which didn't come true quiet yet. The genre of the book is a memoir. The topic of the book is so far future even though there are multiple stories. It is because it talks about fictional stories that are gonna be possible later in life. The main idea of the first story is a kid who lies just to get attention. The main idea is implied and stated at the same time. It's hard to explain. If I could give the first story another title it would be ''The Swirly Slide that Ended With a Lie''. Three supporting details for the main idea is ''There is no sweepstakes, I made it up and I don't even think that factory even exists in real life.'' They are all factual. The essential message in the story is don't bribe your friends to give you attention, that makes you a bad person. A cause in the story is Ernest lying and the effect is him almost losing a friend. In the story a similarity is everyone in the class loves chocolate milk and a difference is that Ernest can't have chocolate milk but everyone else can. Some text features are a painting on the front, black and white illustartions and italicized words. They all impact the text by making it come alive. The P.O.O in the story is Cause and Effect so far because at the beginning something terrible or great happens and at the end a result of that occurs. The author's purpose is to entertain the readers with interesting memoirs. The author in the stories is not really biased towards anything. There is no figurative language. The author's point of view is 1st person because it is a memoir. The only sources in the story are the authors because it is a memoir. I personally believe this is a fifth grade book and I understood every word in the first 50 pages. This book relates to me because I would get angry at my friend if he made up a huge lie like that. This book relates to a book I recently read called Scary stories because they are both made up of multile stories. This book relates to the world because people do lie to their friends all around the world. If I was in Ernest's shoes I would be ashamed of myself and I would know of my wrongdoing.
If I could I would rate this book a 7 out of 10 so far for it is very suspensful.

RJ #12 No One to Call Me Home
11/15/11
Dear Mrs. Zrihen,
I just finished reading the book No One to Call Me Home by Rev. James J. Close. The book was not that interesting but it was inspiring. A passage in the story that I found interesting was found on page 13. It was in the second part of the sentence. '' There would always be someone to call the kids home-kids like Johnny. That passage really shows how determined he is to make life normal for other kids like him.
There were two reading strategies I used before I read the book. First I predicted based on the cover, and I looked for text features and noticed how the front cover picture was black and white. That must mean that the book is old. I also used 2 during reading strategies which were reading slowly to check the words and make sure I understand what I was reading, and rating the book as I go along. The 2 after reading strategies were reading the back so that I can figure out all the extra details that go with the main point, and checking my prediction which was wrong.
The genre of this book is a non-fiction memoir. The topic is generosity. The main idea of the story is that a kid who is not able to live like a normal kid and have all the general necessities helps other kids like himself and shelters them and provides those needs. The main idea is stated. Another title I would give this book would be Poor or Not Were all the Same. Three supporting details in the story I found were names of the people he cared for, names of the shelters such as the Mercy Home. There were different shelters for boys and girls. Finally, by stating all the ideas that he is determined to accomplish and provide for those boys. The essential message in the story is to care for others for you don't realize what you have, until you don't have it. A cause in the story is him losing his needs, and the effect is he helps others get those needs. Two things that were similar in the story were that he was an orphan a long with everyone else he met. Two different things in the story were that he had courage, a lot of the others didn't. Five different text features in the book were photographs on the front and back, and italicised words. There were no more. The P.O.O. in the story is cause and effect because one thing happens because of something else. The author's purpose in the story is to inform us of an important lesson. The author's perspective is biased toward orphanages. The author's point of view is 1st person because it is a memoir. I could not find any figurative language. My book can not be traced to a source for it is a memoir and can only be traced to the author. Some vocab I learned were ample which means pretty big, scruffy which means dirty looking, adamantly which means angrily or firmly, gutsy which means you are brave or filled with guts, and pew which means group. This book relates to me because I am generous also. This book relates to a book I read in the summer of 2010. This book also relates to the world because people like him are very little to be found but they are at there and they always will be.
If I was in Jame's shoes, I'd be happy for the rest of my life and be thankful for what I have. I would give this book a 5 out of 10 because it was boring.

Current Events Journal
Title:
A legacy of service: Three generations of Pines family have served in military
Author: PERRY STEIN
Source: Miami Herald
The topic of the article is honor at its finest
The main idea of the article is: Bolivar Perez Rios is honored with medals for diffusing mines and being blown by one and surviving. The main idea is stated in the article.
(implied/stated)
The author’s purpose for writing this article is to inform our nation of what great accomplishments our fighters have completed and how far they go to protect our country. He did that by giving an example.
The author’s perspective in this article is objective/subjective (biased) because he is for our veterans and the holiday that follows.
The pattern of organization of the article is chronological order because the article shows how he and then his generations after him served in the army.
The reason the author chose this article is because people this age do not realize how dangerous it is in the army and all the brave people who join in order to protect our country.
The text features included in the article are a photograph of a veteran which helps by showing our servers to the country and what they do.
Also a caption under the photo and that helps by showing exactly what is happening in the photo.
This article is about (a summary in your own words) a veteran who shares his stories about a time where he diffused mines except for one which went off. The stories inspired his children and grandchildren to join the army and serve their country. Now he is being honored with many medals including a purple heart.
The significance (importance) of this article is great. The amount of important duties our servers have done for our country is not appreciated enough and that is what this article is trying to say by giving an example.
What I learned from this article is that our veterans support our country, so we should support them.
What I liked about this article is that it made a point by giving an example and justifying it.
What I did not like about it is that it should have been more interesting and suspensful, not boring.
Who should read this article and why? Kids should read this article because they need to learn about our veterans and the army.
This article reminds me of (text-to-self) my dad because he is a veteran.
(text-to-text) This article reminds me of other war books that have to do with world war 2.
(text-to-world) This article reminds me of the killing of Osama Bin Laden.
New vocabulary I learned
Word Context Clues Meaning
I did not find any tricky words although some which were did not have that many context clues.

RJ #11 Scary Stories
11/8/11
Dear Mrs. Zrihen,
I just finished reading the book Scary Stories To Tell in the Dark by Alvin Schwartz. It was really interesting. A sentence that really shocked me throughout all the short stories was '' She had died of fright''. That is on page 42 and really shows how scared we are this age of mythical creatures or ghosts.
I used 2 reading strategies before reading the book. I asked my brother for a reccomendation and skim and scaned for pictures. I also used 2 reading strategies during reading which were reading slowly to make sure I understand everything, and I read the last line from my last time reading to get a feel of what is happening. I used 2 after reading strategies which were summarizing the book in my head and skimming the pictures again to realize what they mean.
The genre in this book is a short story. I cannot list all the characters for there were many short stories and I cannot remember all of them for some of them they are not even mentioned. Same thing with the setting although some of them took place in a basement, a car, or a graveyard. There is no plot structure for there were so many stories although most of them ended with a conflict. The conflicts were mostly man vs. supernatural and external. The tone in the story is scary along with the mood which is also scary. The theme in the story is fright. The moral in the story is to never judge a book by its cover. The point of view in the story is 3rd person because the pronouns that are used consist of he, she, her, him. The pattern of organization in the book varies but is mostly cause and effect. The author's purpose in the story is to entertain others of scary stories about ghosts and spirits. The author's perspective in the story is biased towards believing in ghosts. I really liked this book and if I was in any scary situation like those, I may even die of fright also.
If I could I would rate this book a 9 out of 10 for some of the stories were corny.

RJ #10 Killing Mr. Griffin #2
11/1/11
Dear Mrs. Zrihen,
I just finished reading the book Killing Mr. Griffin by Lois Duncan. The same passage from last time is the same one that is key in this book. It was on page 14. '' That Griffin's the sort of guy you'd like to kill''. That passage shows how suspenseful this book would be and it is so far.
I used 2 before reading strategies such as predicting, and looking at the text features. I also used two during reading strategies which were looking for bold or italicized words, and reading slowly to understand the words. The 2 after reading strategies were checking my prediction, and making another prediction of what the 2nd book in the series will be about.
The genre of this book is mystery which is a sub genre of fiction. The main characters in this story are Susan, Betsy, Mark Kinney, Dave, and Mr. Griffin. The setting takes place in the 21 century in a school called Del Norte High. At the end of the rising action and throughout the exposition, the main characters thought of ways to kill Mr. Griffin. At the end there is a twist which I want you to find out yourself. I think that that idea is insane, so did Susan. The conflict in this story is how they are going to kidnap their teacher without him noticing it is them. The tone is surprising because the characters make decisions you wouldn't think of making. The mood is heart-stopping because the book moves by fast in every scene. The theme in the story is suspense because you are always anxious to see what will happen next. The moral in the story is to never commit a crime. If I tell you more you might find out what the twist is in the book. The point of view in the story is 2nd person. The pattern of organization is chronological order. The author's purpose is to entertain you with a very suspensful backround. The author is not biased towards anything in the bo So far I think this book is my type. If I was in Marks shoes I'd slap myself in the face thinking what I was thinking. Murdering a teacher. I would recommend this book to my whole class for its action.
I would rate this book so far an 8 out of 10 for I liked it, but didn't finish it yet and do not know what will happen.
