RJ #11 Scary Stories

                                                                                                                                                    11/8/11

Dear Mrs. Zrihen,
I just finished reading the book Scary Stories To Tell in the Dark by Alvin Schwartz. It was really interesting. A sentence that really shocked me throughout all the short stories was '' She had died of fright''. That is on page 42 and really shows how scared we are this age of mythical creatures or ghosts.
I used 2 reading strategies before reading the book. I asked my brother for a reccomendation and skim and scaned for pictures. I also used 2 reading strategies during reading which were reading slowly to make sure I understand everything, and I read the last line from my last time reading to get a feel of what is happening. I used 2 after reading strategies which were summarizing the book in my head and skimming the pictures again to realize what they mean.
The genre in this book is a short story. I cannot list all the characters for there were many short stories and I cannot remember all of them for some of them they are not even mentioned. Same thing with the setting although some of them took place in a basement, a car, or a graveyard. There is no plot structure for there were so many stories although most of them ended with a conflict. The conflicts were mostly man vs. supernatural and external. The tone in the story is scary along with the mood which is also scary. The theme in the story is fright. The moral in the story is to never judge a book by its cover. The point of view in the story is 3rd person because the pronouns that are used consist of he, she, her, him. The pattern of organization in the book varies but is mostly cause and effect. The author's purpose in the story is to entertain others of scary stories about ghosts and spirits. The author's perspective in the story is biased towards believing in ghosts. I really liked this book and if I was in any scary situation like those, I may even die of fright also.
If I could I would rate this book a 9 out of 10 for some of the stories were corny.

Sincerley,
Isaac Paley

  1. Dear,

Your Readers Journal was great. I just have a few questions.
First, what would you change if you were the author? Also what would you do in the main characters shoes? Lastly, what was your favorite part?

    Sincerely,

    Mikey

  2. Dear Michael,
I would make the stories a lot mor scarier. Which main character's, I can't do all of them.
My favorite part was finding out that Ms. Goldberg used one of the stories from the book and told it to the class.
