RJ #5 Greek Myths And Legends

                                                                                                                                               9/27/11

Dear Mrs.Zrihen,

I just finished reading the book Greek Myths and Legends by Usborne. There was one passage that really caught my eye. It was on page 8. It stated '' The ancient Greek religion tried to explain how the world began like this: ''. I picked this passage because it showed how the Greek religion really tried to explain everything in the actual bible with their interpretation. The significance of this passage to the book is that it says how they tried to explain how the world was created with their religion. They did not actually explain how scientifically.
I used 2 before reading strategies such as predicting what the book was going to be about, and trying to interpret what the front cover picture meant. The 2 during reading strategies that I used were reading slowley to understand what I was reading, and to slowly comprehend what was happening at that moment and why it was happening. The 2 after reading strategies were studying all the gods in the back. It was impossible to memorize them though. Also, I checked to prove if my prediction was correct or not which it was.
The genre of this book is a myth in the section of a folktale. There are no specific main characters but the  god of gods is Zeus. The setting where all the gods lived was on Mount Olympus at the time of the ancient greeks. There was no plot considering the book listed the gods and what they did and who they punished. There are a lot of problems such as someone who challenged Aphrodite and their punishment was becoming a hiddious monster. There is no tone for there is no plot. Same with mood. The theme in the story is Greek Mythology. The moral in the story is to never challenge a god. The point of view is 3rd person. The pattern of organization is used with subtitles for each god and goddess. The author's purpose is to teach us about the ancient Greeks and their different beliefs. There is no author's perspective or figurative language, for the author wrote the book as an equal sided author. If I was Zeus I would buy everything possible in the world including a 24 karat gold Torah.
If I could rate this book I would give it 3 stars out of 5 because it barely kept me hooked, although it was interesting.

Sincerley,
Isaac Paley

  3. Dear Erika,
Thank you for your comment. The book was boring because of the lack of suspense. It was boring everywhere. The most interesting part to me was when Athena turned a woman into a spider.

  4. Dear Juan,
    Thanks for your comment.
I picked this book because I already know a lot about Greek Mythology. My interpretation of the book was that some of the ancient Greek belief's were kind of crazy. My prediction was that the book will list all the major gods and goddesses.

The book was Man vs. Supernatural. What do you mean by feel anything? I figured out the P.O.O. by looking and seeing that each God or Goddess was shown under a different title.
