RJ #2 Street Pharm

                                                                                                                                 9/6/11

Dear Mrs. Zrihen,
I just finished reading the book Street Pharm by Allison Van Diepen. It was really good. The passage that I picked that I thought was significant was on the last page of the book. (297). '' I know I don't deserve you, Alyse.'' I took her face in my hands, and made her a promise. '' But I will.'' I picked the passage because it shows how a person can change even when they are addicted to selling drugs. The significance of the passage to the book is to go with the moral of the story which is to not do drugs, and you can change your life even when it is messed up.
I started reading after I wrote my first rj on this book which means I already used my two before strategies. Two reading strategies while I was reading was checking each and every word so I would know if I understood it or not. Also I would picture in my mind what was happening on that page at that time. That way I could understand it better. Two after reading strategies I used were looking back at the title and think now of what the illustration on the front cover means. It was a picture of drugs which I now know was Ty's business. Finally, I remembered the conflict which was Darkman, and how they resolved it which I will tell you later. I like the way the author at the end of the story made us hooked with an amazing sentence which I won't tell you. You'll have to read the story.
The genre of this book is realistic fiction because the plot hasn't happened but could happen. The main character's Ty and Sonny are dynamic characters because they describe them a lot yet they don't describe their likings. They were both protagonists and the antagonist is Darkman a competing drug dealer. The setting in the story is Manhattan New York. The time is present. The rising action in the story is Darkman tries to take over Ty's business. The climax is when Sonny gets shot, and after that Ty is so ready to do anything to get rid of Darkman. The falling action is when they figure out a plan to set up Darkman and get him arrested. The resolution is when the plan works and he does get arrested. The conflict is external and man vs. man because Ty is facing Kevin King otherwise known as Darkman. The tone in the story is angry because Ty is angry at Darkman. The mood is sad, because you want Ty to change and you know it is hard for him. The theme in the book is drugs. The moral of the story is to never do drugs, and you can change the course of your life no matter how hard it is. The author's point of view in the story is that you should not give up your life to drugs. The P.O.O. in the story is problem and solution because always a new conflict appears out of the blue. The author's purpose in the story is to inform people about the consequences of drugs. The author is unbiased about selling drugs. I liked that book a lot considering it taught me lessons. I would rate this book a 7 out of ten because of the important lessons and suspense.

sincerely,

  1. Dear Isaac,
I really like this book and the lesson it tells. I like it because it gives clear information about not doing drugs and how it is wrong to do.Have you ever read other books that taught a lesson. Have you ever read books by Allison Van Diepen? How long did it take you to read this book. My book was more than 200 pages so it took me longer. I got a lot of time to read mine but yet again it is long.So it took me about 5 days to read this book.

My strategies that I used for raeding the book were like predicting what is the story being about before reading. And also I skimmed and scanned before reading which is obviously usual for you. Why did you actually pick 7 out of 10 instead of 10 out of 10?I feel like you didn't really enjoy this book but mostly learned from it.I always have that with books sometimes.Have you read other books about drugs? I did but not this kind.I really like this book this was a really good book. Hope you can read more like this.

  2. Dear Isaac,
I enjoyed reading your RJ, but did you enjoy the book? You gave it a 7 out of 10, so that confused me a little. Your article was informative, and it helped correspond with the lesson taught. Have you ever read other books by the author? What would you have done if you were in the main character's shoes?

Who was your favorite character in the story, if you had one? Also, what was your favorite part of the story? I know that this was a story with many life lessons, so you may not have a favorite part. Lastly, why did you pick this story? There are many books to choose from, so why this one in particular? Your RJ was very good, and I look forward to reading your future RJs.
    Sincerely,
    Daniel Norman

  3. Dear Isaac,
You did a great job on your readers journal. And I just wanted to know, what would you do in the main characters shoes? This book sounds very inspiring to me, was it inspiring to you? If you had the opportunity to do drugs, would you? Why or why not? Would you be worried if you, your parents, or friends were taking drugs? What would you do about that? How would you solve it? Would you report it? Looking foward to your next readers journal.
    Please respond back soon.

  4. Dear Fred thank you for your comment. Yes, I have read other books that taught lessons, but most books I read are non-fiction. No, I have not read any books other than this one by this author. It took me 2 weeks to read this book.

I picked 7 out of 10 for this book because it was not the best, but it was still good. I have not read other books about drugs. I feel that it scares me that someone would do a crime like that. I hope I will never do that. Thank You.

  5. Dear Daniel,
Thank you for your comment. Yes, I did enjoy the book. I thought it was very interesting. No, I have not read other books by this author. If I was in the main characters shoe's I would turn myself in for my crime.

My favorite character in the story was Alyse, Ty's girlfriend. I did not have a favorite part considering the whole book was filled with suspense and action. I picked this book because it seemed like it would be an action story. This one in paticular because it seemed like a story that can relate to teens today.

    Thank You,
    Isaac

  6. Dear Eden,
Thank you for your comment. If I was in the main character's shoes I'd turn myself in. This book was the most inspiring fiction book I ever read.

No, I would never do drugs on any cicumstances. I would never do drugs because it could ruin my reputation. I would be so worried if someone in my family were doing drugs. I would report it for their own good.

    Thank You,
    Isaac
